Richard L. Feigen

Richard Feigen is a leading art dealer and president of Richard L. Feigen & Co., art dealers, and an active collector of old master and 20th century paintings. Feigen inaugurated his first gallery in Chicago in 1957, where he exhibited 20th century masters, concentrating on German expressionism and surrealism. He was also an early champion of such artists as Francis Bacon, Jean Dubuffet, Joseph Cornell, Claes Oldenburg, Ray Johnson and James Rosenquist.

In 1963 he opened a second gallery in New York City, showing works by such classic 19th and 20th century artists as van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Brancusi and Mondrian. By 1965, and until 1973, Feigen was also operating what was the first gallery in SoHo, which showed cutting-edge contemporary art, such 20th century masters as Max Beckmann, Jean Dubuffet, Joseph Cornell, James Rosenquist and Jasper Johns, impressionism and post impressionism, but also, old masters- Italian mannerism and the baroque, French neo-classicism and British romanticism.

Over the past fifty-seven years Richard L. Feigen has sold works of art covering seven centuries to some 117 museums worldwide. Most of the world’s major museums the Louvre, the Metropolitan, the National galleries of Washington and London, the Getty, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Boston, Stockholm, Berlin – are among his clients.Richard Feigen is the author of Tales from the Art Crypt (Knopf, 2000), as well as many articles. He continues to lecture at such institutions as the Harvard Business School (as recently as in May and September 2007 and 2008); Harvard University; the Cleveland Museum; the University of Virginia School of Architecture; the Virginia Museum; the Birmingham Museum of Art; etc. Feigen is a Benefactor and Fellow for Life of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Metropolitan Museum; the Minneapolis Institute if Arts; etc. He has served as a trustee of The John Jay Homestead, Katonah, New York; Lincoln University, Lincoln, Pennsylvania; the Art Dealers Association of America.  Feigen was born in Chicago in 1930. 

Feigen has been involved in candidates and issues on the American scene for over five decades.
